Gum Disease Symptoms

Overview

Healthy Gums
Healthy Smile

Oral health isn't just about your teeth. Your gums support and protect them, and when gums are neglected, the whole mouth suffers.

Here are the symptoms to watch for so you can catch gum disease early.

Persistent Bad Breath

Everyone wakes up with morning breath. But bad breath that hangs on all day — even after brushing and rinsing — can mean bacteria are thriving under the gum line. Mouthwash only masks the smell temporarily; the infection keeps working.

Bleeding Gums

If your gums bleed regularly when you brush or floss but you feel no pain, you may have gingivitis — the earliest, mildest form of gum disease. Consistent home care can often reverse it, especially when caught early.

Receding Gums

A "toothier" smile can indicate gums that are pulling away from the teeth. Gum recession is a serious symptom because it exposes the tooth root and can lead to sensitivity, decay, and eventual tooth loss.

Tenderness or Pain

Sore, swollen, or tender gums can make eating uncomfortable and often signal inflammation that needs professional attention.

Loose Teeth

Teeth that shift slightly when you chew are a warning sign that your gums may be too weakened to hold them securely. Left alone, this can eventually lead to tooth loss.
